Homemade Pasta Sauce

A delicious homemade pasta sauce that is so versatile it can be used in any recipe.

This pasta sauce is so much better then the store bought kind. It has the prefect balance of spices to tomato taste and very little added sugar. It can be served as is over spaghetti noodles or add in some cooked ground beef and some more vegetables to make a hearty spaghetti sauce. You can also use it in your favourite recipe to replace store bought pasta sauce. Freeze portion size amounts to have ready to use.

I have started to make my own pasta sauce recently. A friend of mine got me thinking about all the “hidden” sugars that we eat without really thinking about it. Pasta sauce is one of the pre made foods that actually contains quite a bit of sugar without us even realizing. But if you make your own, there is not a lot (if any) added sugar. It’s not that hard to make your own pasta sauce, just takes a bit of time to simmer for the best taste. Once you’ve made a batch you can freeze portions to use in your favourite recipes. I like to use it in Mexican lasagna and undone stuffed peppers.

Heat olive oil In a large pot over medium high heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté.

Add tomatoes and tomato paste and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add sugar and herbs and simmer an additional 45 minutes.

Remove from heat and puree if desired.

Use as a pasta sauce in your favourite recipe or freeze in a container to use later.
Tip: double or triple the recipe so you have some pasta sauce on hand.
