DIY Syrups

Milk and cookies for the 8th day of Christmas.

12 days eight

I had a bit of trouble finding something for milk. I tried making milk pudding but the kids did not like it very much. I thought it tasted okay. It had a similar taste to rice pudding, but without the rice. But the kids thought I should try something else.

After talking to Janice and brainstorming some ideas, we came up with milk and cookies. But not just any milk, chocolate and strawberry!! I love the idea of using a syrup to flavour the milk. These syrups can be stored in the fridge for at least a week (if they last that long) and can be used not just in milk but on ice cream, over pancakes, in smoothies, or on anything else you want. Make a double batch of each and get creative!

Chocolate Syrup

Stir all ingredients together in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil and boil for 5-10 minutes, stirring constantly, until sauce begins to thicken. Store in a glass container with a lid in the refrigerator. Use 2-4 tablespoons per 1 cup of milk.

Strawberry Syrup

In a small saucepan add honey, strawberries and water. Bring to a simmer over medium low heat for 15 minutes. Stir occasionally and squish the strawberries as it simmers. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer, if desired. I like having the few chunks left in the syrup. Pour the syrup into a glass container with a lid. Store in the refrigerator. Use 3-4 tablespoons of syrup per 1 cup of milk.
